Lewis named Dr. Jack Dean Kingsbury Professor of New Testament Theology

Dr. David Lewis [1] has been named the Dr. Jack Dean Kingsbury Professor of New Testament Theology, an endowed faculty position at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis that has been established to support scholarship in the area of New Testament studies. He will be formally installed in his new role during the Seminary’s Opening Service for the 187th academic year at 10:30 a.m. CDT Friday, Aug. 22, 2025.

Dr. David Lewis

Lewis currently serves as an associate professor of Exegetical Theology, director of the Master of Divinity and Residential Alternate Route Programs, and adviser to the Student Association. He has served on the Seminary faculty since 2004.

“Dr. Lewis has been carefully studying and reflecting on the New Testament for more than three decades and is a much-loved professor to our students. His work on the Gospel of Mark, in particular, has brought him into conversation with scholars from many backgrounds,” said President Dr. Thomas J. Egger [2]. “It is a pleasure to name him to this endowed faculty chair, established by a good friend and supporter of Concordia Seminary, Dr. Jack Dean Kingsbury, whose own scholarship on the Gospels has been an inspiration to many of us.”

The Dr. Jack Dean Kingsbury Chair of New Testament Theology [3] was established in 2015 by Dr. Jack Dean Kingsbury [4], a renowned New Testament scholar, to promote rigorous study and teaching of the New Testament within the Seminary’s academic community. The chair was previously occupied by Professor Emeritus of Exegetical Theology Dr. James W. Voelz, [5] who retired from the faculty earlier this year.

Lewis was selected for the Kingsbury Chair in recognition of his scholarly contributions in the areas of biblical Greek, hermeneutics and the Synoptic Gospels — particularly the Gospel of Mark.

Lewis holds a Doctor of Philosophy (2020), a Master of Sacred Theology (1998) and a Master of Divinity (1994) from Concordia Seminary. He earned his bachelor’s degree at California State University, Fullerton, Calif., in 1988. Prior to joining the faculty full time, he served as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Crescent City, Calif. (1998–2004), and as a guest instructor at the Seminary (1995–98, 2003).

“I consider it the greatest honor to follow my mentor and friend Dr. James W. Voelz in being named the Dr. Jack Dean Kingsbury Professor of New Testament Theology,” said Lewis. “I pray that our Lord will guide and enable me to serve faithfully in this important position.”
