LutherHostel 2000 Is a Success

An enthusiastic group of 38 adults participated in LutherHostel 2000, held Oct. 7- 10 on the campus of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. “Light for All Ages” was the theme for this year’s LutherHostel, an educational event for adults, 55 years of age or above, held every year on the Seminary campus. LutherHostel combines presentations by Seminary faculty, attendance at Seminary classes, topical presentations by local experts and plenty of socialization and fun. A total of 38 participants from as far away as Florida and Montana enjoyed the event.

“This was a wonderful experience,” commented one participant. Another commented, “It was a very affirming experience spiritually, particularly as an encouragement to us elderly as to how we can make a difference in our homes, community, churches and nation.”

Rev. Leroy Biesenthal, former Executive Director of Evangelism for The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS), was the speaker for the Monday evening candlelight dinner. He and his wife Marie led activities for participants on Saturday evening.

Several Concordia Seminary faculty members made special presentations to the group. Rev. Larry Rockemann, vice president for student life, presented “Light for Our Families.” Dr. Bryan Salminen, coordinator of specialized testing and counseling services presented “Light that Lightens: Joy in Our Faith.” Prof. R. Reed Lessing, of the Seminary’s exegetical theology department presented “Light from the Word.” Dr. Henry Rowold, mission professor of practical theology and his wife, Phyllis, presented “Light for Our Mission.”

Other speakers at the event included Mrs. Marty Lintvedt, a member of the Seminary’s counseling services staff, and Rev. Steven Albers, pastor of Glendale Lutheran Church, Glendale Mo. Each of the presenters brought their expertise and unique perspective to the theme of “Light for All Ages.”

The event began on Saturday evening with a western-style cookout. Other activities included a carillon concert, tours of Concordia Historical Institute and radio station KFUO, and student-led evening devotions.

This year, a tour of the Lutheran historical sites in Perry County, Mo. was conducted on Oct. 11, following the LutherHostel. Rev. Walter Schoedel and his wife, Leota, served as the host couple. Schoedel is the director of church relations for Lutheran Senior Services in St. Louis, Mo. He was also the Sunday morning Bible class leader.

The next LutherHostel will take place Sept. 29-Oct. 2, 2001. For more information, contact the Office of Continuing Education at (314) 505-7105 or e-mail at ce@csl.edu.
