Concordia Seminary Announces Winter Lay Bible Institute

Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, will host its winter 2009 Lay Bible Institute from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, Jan. 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2009, in Sieck Hall 202 on the Seminary campus. “Woman and Man—According to God’s Plan” will be presented by Dr. Joel Biermann, associate professor of systematic theology at Concordia Seminary.

In this Lay Bible Institute, the participants will consider God’s basic operating paradigm for His creation—starting with the creation account and also exploring the gospels and epistles. The class will take up a number of practical topics including the roles of men and women in the home and in the church, the question of the ordination of women, and the implications that God’s truth has for secular society.

Biermann received the B.A. degree from Concordia College, Ann Arbor, Mich. (1983) and the M.Div. degree and Ph.D. degree from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo. (1987, 2002). He served as assistant pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bemidji, Minn. (1987-88); assistant pastor at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Holt, Mich. (1988-89); and pastor (1989-98) and pastoral assistant at The Lutheran Church of Webster Gardens, Webster Groves, Mo. since 2000. He served as assistant professor of systematic theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis (2002-2007) and associate professor of systematic theology since 2007.
