Last Bach at the Sem Concert of the Season on April 17

For the fourth and final concert of the Bach at the Sem 2010-2011 season, The American Kantorei welcomes as guests, Greenville College Choir, Greenville, Ill., on Palm Sunday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus on the Seminary campus. Concordia Seminary is located at 801 Seminary Place in Clayton, Mo. There is no entrance fee, but a free will offering is taken at each concert in support of the creation and encouragement of fine live performance.
Greenville College Choir consists of 52 undergraduate students from various fields of liberal arts study, including the college’s five music degree programs. As the flagship choral ensemble of Greenville College, the choir presents as many as 20 off-campus performances each year as
part of its annual tour. Students’ dedication to the program is consistently made evident by the professional quality of their performances.
Jeffrey S. Wilson has been conducting the Greenville College Choir since 1996. He earned the Master of Music degree in choral music and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting and literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Wilson is Chair of the Music Department at Greenville College. He also teaches voice and organ at the college.
The American Kantorei singers will be amplified in number by the Greenville College Choir in their performance of Bach’s canticle, the Magnificat, with chorus, orchestra, and soloists from both choirs. Orchestral soloists include John Korak, Robert Souza, and Mary Weber, trumpet; Paula Kasica and Jennifer Adams, flute; and Ann Homann and Eileen Burke, oboe. Choral soloists include Emily Truckenbrod, Joy Boland, Jean Baue, and Kayla Wiersma (Greenville), soprano; Katharine Lawton Brown and Jane Robinson, mezzo; Jeral Becker and Terrince Tackett (Greenville), tenor; and David Berger, bass-baritone.
Dennis Bergin will perform Bach’s brief prelude on the hymn, “Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands,” and a modern setting of Choral-Improvisation sur le “Victimae paschali” by the French composer Tournemire.
