Preachers alumni basketball game raises funds for local nonprofit
Current students, alumni compete in ‘Hoops for Hope’ Feb. 8
Sports lovers and seminarians alike will be treated to an unforgettable night Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, when current Concordia Seminary Preachers basketball players face off against alumni. The third annual “Hoops for Hope” alumni basketball game will support the Lutheran Hope Center in Ferguson, Mo.
“Ministry is a team effort. Healthy congregations involve both pastors and congregations working together in the service of the Gospel,” said Assistant Coach and Assistant Professor of Practical Theology Dr. Peter Nafzger. “The players on the ‘Preachers’ basketball team learn this in tangible ways as they work together on the court. When the alumni come to town, these seminarians get a chance to play against future colleagues in ministry. Not only is this a great time for fellowship and friendly competition, it’s also a chance to look outside ourselves and support a local ministry!”
The Lutheran Hope Center is a partnership of Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) congregations in north St. Louis County. The center serves to share the hope of Jesus Christ by providing opportunities for youth and families to grow spiritually, academically, socially and personally. Rev. Micah Glenn (’16) serves as executive director. An offering will be collected at the game. Last year’s game raised $1,338 for the Lutheran Hope Center.
This family-friendly event will feature games and activities at halftime.
The game begins at 7 p.m. in the Pederson Fieldhouse located on the campus of Concordia Seminary, 801 Seminary Place, St. Louis, Mo. Alumni players interested in playing are encouraged to email Nafzger at nafzgerp@csl.edu by Jan. 31.
