LWML awards Concordia Seminary 100K grant

Funds to benefit ethnic students

Concordia Seminary, St. Louis has been selected as one of 21 recipients of a mission grant from the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML). The approved mission grant, “Making Jesus Known in the United States Ethnic Communities,” will help fund the education costs of students enrolled in the Seminary’s Center for Hispanic Studies (CHS) or the Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology (EIIT).

The LWML approved the $100,000 grant during its 38th Biennial Convention held June 20-23 in Mobile, Ala. In all, the LWML approved 21 grants and adopted a $2.1 million mission goal for the 2019-21 biennium.

“We are immensely grateful and thankful to the LWML for understanding the important mission of the CHS and EIIT programs,” said Rev. Kou Seying, the Seminary’s associate dean of Urban and Cross-Cultural Ministry who oversees CHS and EIIT. “This grant will help CHS and EIIT students receive the ministry preparation they need to help them share the Gospel in U.S. immigrant communities from coast to coast.

“We remain humbled by the generosity of the LWML and the faithful commitment of its members to support the Seminary and our students.”

The mission of CHS is to form Lutheran pastors and deaconesses to make Christ known in U.S. Hispanic-Latino communities. The EIIT aims to form Lutheran pastors and deaconesses to make Christ known in American communities comprising other immigrant/ethnic groups, largely those from countries in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

“Lutheran Women in Mission seek to share the message of Jesus Christ with every nation,” said LWML President Debbie Larson. “As people from other nations immigrate to this country, LWML is excited to, by the grace of God, fund this mission grant that provides solid theological training to those who want to share the Gospel message within their communities.”
