New Lenten Sermon Series on repentance now available for download
What does true repentance look like? That’s the focus of a new Lenten Sermon Series, “Honest Repentance,” now available from Concordia Seminary Press, the publishing arm of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
The series, authored by Dr. David Maxwell, the Louis A. Fincke and Anna B. Shine Professor of Systematic Theology, provides six sermons to aid pastors in their preparation for Lenten midweek services.
“Repentance starts with being honest before God and ourselves about who we are. When it comes to sin, everyone has a natural impulse to hide, but repentance means finding the courage to be honest,” Maxwell says in the series’ introduction.
Each sermon draws from Scripture readings traditionally assigned for the Easter Vigil to explore what repentance is — and what a life of repentance looks like.
“In the context of the Easter Vigil, these readings capture the broad sweep of God’s saving acts in the Bible, culminating in Baptism, which traditionally takes place at the vigil,” Maxwell says. “That makes the readings good candidates for exploring the Christian use of Baptism through ‘daily contrition and repentance,’ as the Small Catechism puts it.”
“Honest Repentance” is available as a PDF download for $19.95 from Concordia Seminary’s online store.
