The Passion According To St. John To Be Performed At Next Bach At The Sem Concert
The Passion According to St. John as set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed Sunday, March 21 at 3:00 p.m. in Concordia Seminary’s Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus, in Clayton, Missouri, by The American Kantorei, with Dr. Robert Bergt conducting.
The demanding role of Evangelist is sung by tenor, Jeral Becker, professor at Saint Louis University. The role of Christ is sung by bass-baritone, Jay Willoughby. Both men are members of the Kantorei chorus. Major aria singers are Joy Boland and Jean Baue, soprano; Katharine Lawton Brown, mezzo-soprano; Arie Perry, tenor; and David Berger, bass-baritone.
The dramatic oratorio by Bach sets forth the Biblical and historical passion and death of Jesus Christ. The chorales and poetic arias express the meditation, adoration, and praise of the Christian’s belief. The combination of soloists, chorus, and orchestra present a supremely dramatic review of the events of Holy Week in a most reverent and impressive presentation. The congregation also sings its response in a time-tested and treasured chorale.
The public is invited to attend. Bach at the Sem is made possible through the generous support of patrons and donors. An offering is taken at each concert in support of the creation and encouragement of fine live performance.
