Two special lectures offered
Heather Davis and Leann Luchinger presented their lecture “Loaded Words” to students, faculty and staff Oct. 13 at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Their presentation focused on how to unpack “theological jargon” for lay people. The women are authors of the book, Loaded Words: Freeing 12 Hard Bible Words from Their Baggage.
The women explained how many people, even confessing Christians, don’t truly understand basic terms like confess, judgment and grace in a Christian context. They encouraged attendees to point out the common misconceptions, strip words down to their original biblical language and to re-present them
to congregations. “The way people hear words matters,” they said.
Tim Goeglein, senior advisor to the president and vice president for external relations at Focus on the Family in Washington, D.C., presented “Faith in the Halls of Power: The Fate and State of Marriage, Human Life and Religious Life in the 21st Century” Oct. 6 in Werner Auditorium at Concordia Seminary.
“I believe we are experiencing a moral crisis that has historical implications,” Goeglein told the students, faculty and staff at the campus presentation. “The fate and state of the natural, nuclear family is not being talked about in this presidential election.”
He also discussed abortion, families with absentee fathers and pending U.S. Supreme Court cases that threaten religious liberties. He also stressed the important role Christians have in the future of American politics. “We have something very special to share with our country and culture,” Goeglein said.
“Faith and public life in America go together.”
