Fourth annual Prevallet Hymn Writing Workshop set for Feb. 8

Opportunities for individual coaching available

Prevallet Hymn Writing Workshop

Registration is open for the fourth annual Prevallet Hymn Writing Workshop, set for Saturday, Feb. 8, from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., on the campus of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Aspiring and published hymn writers and translators, including any and all Concordia Seminary students and their spouses, are encouraged to attend. Coaching with the presenters and other local hymn writers for those interested will be available in the afternoon.

“The Lord has more gifts to give His church through the songs and hymns yet to be born,” said Dean of Chapel Dr. Jon Vieker. “This workshop is an excellent opportunity for hymn writers and hymn lovers in general to learn about the art of hymn writing.”

This year’s keynote presenter will be Dr. David Rogner, Distinguished Professor of English at Concordia University Chicago, River Forest, Ill., where he has served since 1986. Rogner’s areas of expertise include British Romanticism, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, 19th and 20th century poetry, hymnody and the intersection of Christian art and poetry. His hymn texts and poetry have been published by Concordia Publishing House and MorningStar Music, and two of his hymns are included in Lutheran Service Book.

The registration fee is $15 and includes a copy of “The Anatomy of Hymnody” by Austin C. Lovelace, which will be provided to each participant at the event. Registration is free for Concordia Seminary students and spouses. The deadline to register is Feb. 5.

The workshop will be held in the lower level of the Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus, 801 Seminary Place, St. Louis, MO 63105.
