Rev. Maynard Dorow, a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod missionary in Korea from 1958 to 1998, served as missionary-in-residence at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, on Jan. 15-17, 2001. The three-day residency program at Concordia Seminary is designed to inform and encourage the Seminary’s students, faculty and staff regarding mission opportunities.
As missionary-in-residence, Rev. Dorow served as preacher in the Seminary’s morning chapel service on Tuesday, Jan. 16. He also visited many classes and talked with students concerning mission opportunities. On Wednesday, Jan. 5, he delivered a special convocation address for the entire Seminary community. On Monday evening, Jan. 15, Shirley Dorow, wife of Rev. Dorow, addressed a meeting of the Seminary Women’s Association, a campus group consisting primarily of wives, fiancees and girlfriends of Seminary students.
Rev. Dorow is a 1956 graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He also received a master of sacred theology degree and an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Concordia Seminary in 1963 and 1983 respectively. In June 1998, Rev. Dorow was awarded The Order of Diplomatic Service Merit Heung-In Medal from His Excellency, Kim Dae-jung, president of South Korea. This honor was bestowed in recognition of Rev. Dorow’s “distinguished service in the field of education and mission to the Republic of Korea, his contribution to the strengthening of cooperative ties between the Republic of Korea and the United States of America and his valuable dedication and service to the Korean people.”
“We are grateful to Rev. and Mrs. Dorrow for their significant involvement in the life of our Seminary community during these days,” commented Rev. Larry Rockemann, vice president for student life at Concordia. “Programs such as this help all of us retain a strong mission fervor. This is absolutely essential as we teach and as our students prepare to serve in the pastoral ministry.”
