On Tuesday, April 26, the final slate of candidates to be considered for the call to serve as the 10th president of Concordia Seminary was established. The candidates are:

Rev. Dr. Andrew H. Bartelt, St. Louis, Mo.
Rev. Dr. Dale A. Meyer, Collinsville, Ill.
Rev. Dr. Jacob A. O. Preus III, Irvine, Calif.

These three candidates were selected from the 15 nominees who gave formal approval to have their names remain in consideration for the call. Bartelt serves as vice president for academic affairs, executive assistant to the president and professor of exegetical theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Meyer serves as interim president, professor of practical theology and occupant of the Gregg H. Benidt Memorial Endowed Chair of Homiletics and Literature at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Preus serves as the president of Concordia University, Irvine, Calif.

In accordance with the Bylaws of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, the slate was established by the Seminary’s Board of Regents (each voting individually), the district president elected to the Seminary’s Board of Regents (Dr. Arleigh L. Lutz, North Wisconsin District), the president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (Dr. Gerald B. Kieschnick) and the chairman of the Synod’s Board for Pastoral Education (John M. Behrendt).

These electors will conduct a series of interviews with the final nominees on Wednesday, May 11. Following the interviews, the electors will vote to determine the candidate who will receive the call. In this vote, electors Lutz, Kieschnick and Behrendt each will have one vote, and the remaining members of the Seminary’s Board of Regents will have one collective vote.

The candidate and his deliberation process concerning the call he has received will be remembered in prayer during the Seminary’s morning chapel service immediately following the May 12 announcement and news conference. Finally, a reception will take place immediately following the chapel service, allowing the Seminary community and guests the opportunity to greet the candidate called.
