Fall Lay Bible Institute begins in October
Four-week seminar focuses on the authority of Scripture
The authority of Scripture will be the focus of Concordia Seminary’s Fall Lay Bible Institute for laity, theology students, pastors and others interested in the proclamation of the Gospel. The lectures will be held four Wednesday evenings this October and November.
The deadline for registration is Sept. 30. The cost of registration is $30.
“From Jesus to the Bible (and Back): Meeting the Crisis of Scripture as People of the Word” will be hosted by Dr. Peter Nafzger, assistant professor of practical theology (homiletics), Oct. 5, 12 and 26 and Nov. 2 in Sieck Hall 202 on the Seminary’s campus, 801 Seminary Place, St. Louis.
The institute will examine why we believe the Scriptures are the written Word of God, how they are related to the incarnate and spoken forms of the Word, and what role they play in our faith and life together.
“There is little dispute that the Bible is the most influential book in history. It’s also been the most challenged,” Nafzger said. “Ever since the Enlightenment, the Bible has been under intense and sustained attack. Voices inside and outside the church have called into question its contents, authority and interpretation. These challenges have only increased in recent decades.
“Rather than viewing the present situation as cause for despair, we meet it confidently as ‘people of the Word.’ As such, we approach the Scriptures with faith in Jesus, the crucified and risen Word made flesh; with vigor to proclaim God’s living and active Word to all; and with humble gratitude for the written Word of the prophets and apostles.”
