Reverend Timothy H. Maschke
The Distinguished Alumnus Award
Rev. Timothy Maschke is a pastor, teacher and theologian who has helped to prepare and form hundreds of students for service and ministry in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ for generations to come.
Maschke received his Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in 1974 and a Master of Sacred Theology in 1981. He also holds a Doctor of Ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Ill. (1984), and in 1993, he earned a Ph.D. in historical theology from Marquette University under the late Luther scholar, Dr. Kenneth Hagen. Sent from the Seminary, he served at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin, Ill., from 1974-80, and The Lutheran Church of Saint Luke in Itasca, Ill., from 1980-82.
He then moved into the academic realm, joining the faculty of Concordia College in Milwaukee, Wis. (now Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon), as an associate professor and campus pastor from 1982-95. He was named a full professor and served as chairman of the Department of Theology from 1995-2002. He retired in 2018. He continues to serve as an instructor for several online courses and serves as associate pastor for care ministry at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Grafton, Wis.
Maschke taught courses in biblical, doctrinal, historical and practical theology, with a special interest in biblical doctrine, Luther and Lutheran worship. He has written dozen of scholarly articles and has several projects in the works including several hymn background essays for the Lutheran Service Book: Hymnal Companion and “Martin Luther’s Sermons, Worship Aids, and Catechisms” for Cambridge University Press’ Luther In Context series. His introduction to the history of Christianity, Called to Be Holy in the World from Wipf and Stock, was published in 2016. A second edition of his book, Gathered Guests: A Guide to Worship in the Lutheran Church, was published in 2009 from Concordia Publishing House. He is a noted speaker at conferences and workshops around the country and, most recently, has given numerous presentations on the life and thought of Martin Luther.
Maschke holds membership in several professional organizations, including the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference, and the American Society of Church History. He is the corporate representative for Lutheran Quarterly. He has received multiple advising and teaching awards.
Maschke and his wife, Sharon, have three sons and five grandchildren.
