Professor Emeritus

David Berger is a professor emeritus at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.

Retiring in 2011 after 21 years of service as director of Library Services and associate professor or Practical Theology, Berger continued part-time for two years until a new library director was in place. Teaching assignments included pre-seminary speech and the graduate lab in theological writing.

Prior to coming to the Seminary in 1990, Berger taught English at Concordia College and High School (1963-77) and Portland Lutheran High School (1977-78) in Portland, Ore., and served as director of Library Services at Concordia College, Milwaukee, later known as Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon (1978-90).

He earned his Master of Library Science (M.L.S.) at the University of Portland (1969). He holds a Master of Arts (M.A.) in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Ill. (1963), and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Concordia Teachers College (now Concordia University Chicago) in River Forest, Ill. (1962).

Articles by Berger have appeared in the Concordia Journal, Lutheran Education, Logia, The Lutheran Witness and Missio Apostolica/Lutheran Mission Matters. He has edited translations of several works of Johann Gerhard and does copy editing for Good News and Lutheran Mission Matters.

Berger has been a member of several professional organizations, including the St. Louis Theological Consortium and the American Theological Library Association’s Preservation Committee. He served on the Board of Communication Services of the LCMS (2001-10) and was a member of the Translations Committee for the preparation of the Lutheran Service Book (1998-2004).

In his avocation as a professional concert singer, Berger performed with many musical organizations from coast to coast and was principal bass of the Collegium Vocale of St. Louis (1997-2016) and the American Kantorei (Bach at the Sem) at Concordia Seminary (1993-2015).
He and his wife, Judith, have two daughters.
